The business problem
Audience Segmentation
A visual beauty and makeover platform let users explore hairstyles and cosmetics based on their own characteristics, but needed to make a large number of beauty choices feel understandable and personally relevant rather than overwhelming.
The decision we made
Make a Big Catalog Feel Personal
Turning a large, hard-to-browse beauty and hairstyle catalog into a personalized journey anchored to the visitor's own profile or photo, so discovery narrows to what's personally relevant.
What changed
A visual, conversion-focused makeover journey anchored to model or personal profile selection, with hairstyle exploration by type and color tied to salons and celebrity inspiration, guidance for highlights and hair-color changes, product-discovery paths for lipstick, liner, gloss, eyeshadow, and other cosmetics, and user photo upload with virtual try-on for products and styles.
Observed outcome
Anchoring the journey to the visitor's own profile or uploaded photo turned a catalog too large to browse generically into a personally filtered set of relevant options.
What this teaches
When a catalog offers more choices than a visitor can reasonably evaluate on their own, anchoring the journey to the visitor's own characteristics (their photo, their profile) turns an overwhelming set of options into a small, personally relevant set.
How we would apply AI today
Today, AI would accelerate the personalization work behind this engagement: synthesizing evidence about the audience segmentation pattern faster, drafting audience-specific page and message variants for review, and learning from what visitors actually do so the next iteration is better-informed. Expert judgment still decides what to test and what the evidence actually means; AI speeds up the work, it doesn't replace the decision.
Who this fits
This approach is useful when:
- Beauty, apparel, or visual-product brands with a large catalog of style, color, or product variations
- Businesses where visitors struggle to picture how a product or style applies to them specifically
- Brands that could use a photo-upload or profile-based entry point to personalize discovery
