Be findable when search means an answer, not just a ranked list.

AI search optimization (AEO/GEO) is the work of structuring your content, data, and authority so AI assistants and answer engines can understand who you are, what you do, and cite you confidently when someone asks. It is one growing source of intent alongside traditional search, not a replacement for it – the same buyer questions, surfacing in a new place, that still need to convert once the visitor arrives.

AI search is a growing source of intent alongside traditional search, not a replacement for it. When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or an AI overview “who’s good at X near me,” the answer names a small number of options – and if you’re not structured to be understood by the model, you don’t get considered, the same way you wouldn’t get considered by a search engine that couldn’t parse your page. The work is making your content clear enough – in schema, entity definitions, and plainly stated claims – that an AI system can accurately describe and cite you when it’s relevant. That’s a real, measurable channel worth building deliberately. It is not a claim that traditional search traffic has stopped mattering, and it is not a guarantee that any AI system will choose to cite a given business – only that the structural work makes it possible instead of accidental.

The bottom stream is AI assistants and answer engines, shown as an answer bubble. They converge into one view of customer intent, which feeds the optimization system at the Discover stage. SEO, AEO, and GEO – plainly

  • SEO (search engine optimization) is the discipline of ranking a page higher in a traditional search results list.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization) is the discipline of structuring content – schema, clear entity definitions, plainly stated claims – so an AI assistant or search engine can extract a direct, quotable answer and cite your business by name.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization) describes the same underlying discipline from the output side: how accurately and favorably a business is represented inside an AI-generated answer, once that answer has been generated. In practice, AEO is the input work and GEO is the outcome it’s aimed at – most people use the terms close to interchangeably.

SEO remains the foundation both are built on: a page that traditional search doesn’t index and understand is rarely read by an AI model either.

Is this your problem?

Five signs you’re losing visibility to AI search.

  1. Organic impressions are flat or falling even though your rankings for the same terms haven’t dropped.
  2. Prospects mention finding you through “ChatGPT” or “an AI search” during sales calls, but you can’t see that channel in analytics.
  3. A competitor with a weaker traditional SEO position gets named ahead of you when you ask an AI assistant the question a buyer would ask.
  4. Your site’s key claims (what you do, who you serve, what makes you different) live mostly in images, PDFs, or JavaScript-rendered content a crawler can’t easily read as plain text.
  5. You’ve never checked what ChatGPT, Gemini, or an AI overview says about your business when asked directly.

If three or more of these are true, AI search visibility is a real gap worth addressing – as one growing channel alongside the search work you already do, not a replacement for it.

AI search optimization is not right as a substitute for a site that doesn’t yet convert once a visitor arrives. Getting cited by an AI assistant sends a visitor to the same page your other channels send visitors to – if that page doesn’t convert, being found by more channels just means more people encounter the same unsolved problem faster. See Conversion Optimization first if that’s the real gap.

The problem

When the answer is a paragraph, not a page, “ranking” stops meaning much.

A buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google’s AI overview “who’s good at X near me” – and gets a short, confident answer naming a few options. If you’re not one of them, you never get the click, the comparison, or the chance to make your case. Years of SEO bought you a spot on a results page that fewer people read.

The catch is that these engines don’t read your site the way a customer does. They read structure – the entities you name, the claims you can back, the schema in your markup, the answers stated plainly enough to quote. A site that looks great to a human can be a fog to a model. So the businesses that win this shift aren’t the ones shouting loudest; they’re the ones that made themselves easy to understand and safe to recommend.

What it actually is

Making your business clear enough that an AI will confidently cite you.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) – also called AI search optimization – is the work of structuring your content, data, and authority so AI assistants and search engines can understand who you are, what you do, and why you’re a trustworthy answer. It’s the SEO discipline carried forward into a world where the result is a recommendation, not a ranking.

In plain terms: state your claims clearly, mark up the page so a machine knows what each part means, define the entities – your services, locations, expertise – that a model uses to place you, and back it with sources it can verify. The proof is the page you’re reading. This site is built as raw, readable HTML text with structured schema and deliberate entity optimization – the same method we’d apply to yours, not a theory we’d sell you.

How we do it

AI search is another source of intent feeding Discover.

In the Experience Optimization Framework, AI search optimization lives at the Discover stage – the front door where we learn how customers find you and what they’re trying to do. Treating AI search as just another channel misses the point. It’s a new source of intent: the same questions your buyers ask, surfacing in a new place. We capture that intent and feed it into the same loop that runs everything else – experiment, personalize, learn – so visibility in answer engines connects directly to what happens after the click.

Concretely: we audit how AI platforms currently read your brand, fix the structure – schema, entities, clear answerable content – and track whether the engines start citing you. Then we measure those visitors through to conversion like any other source. After 26 years across 25+ marketing technologies, the discipline is familiar even when the surface is new: make the signal clean, prove it works, and let evidence – not guesswork – set the next move.

AI-search intent enters at Discover and flows through the system to conversion Two intent sources, traditional search and AI answer engines, feed the Discover stage. From Discover the flow runs through Experiment, Personalize and Learn, ending in conversion. A return arrow shows the system is continuous, getting smarter with every interaction. DISCOVERY TO CONVERSION One continuous system – from first discovery to conversion. Search intent AI-search intent Discover Experiment Person-alize Learn Convert Every interaction feeds the next cycle – the system gets smarter. AI search isn’t another channel. It’s another input to one optimization system.

Common questions

Common questions about AI search optimization.

Is AEO different from SEO?

It's SEO carried forward. The same intent surfaces in a new place – an answer, not a ranking – so the work is making your content easy to understand and safe to recommend.

How do you measure AI search results?

We audit how AI platforms read your brand today, fix the structure (schema, entities, answerable content), track whether engines start citing you, then measure those visitors through to conversion like any other source.

Why am I losing traffic even though I rank?

When the answer is a paragraph, not a page, fewer people click the results page. Being the cited answer is what captures that intent now.
