Whether you sell paper or electronics, having a website that is well-designed and easy to use is incredibly important. If you poorly optimize your website and pick a layout that is hard to read and counter intuitive, you could end up significantly hurting your business. If you’re looking to improve your website’s layout and convert more casual visitors into longtime customers, you’ll want to follow these guidelines for web design.

Have A Professional Looking Logo

When you think of the biggest brand name products, you usually tend to think of ones that have universally recognized logos. So, when you’re designing your website, you’ll want to make sure to place a high-resolution photo of your company’s logo in a prominent position on your website.

You can place your logo on the sidebar or the top of the page, as long as it is easy to see and clearly visible. Doing so will make your website seem more professional, which means your customers will be more likely to give you their business.

Less Is More

Too many websites want to try and overload their customers with walls of texts or an array of media content. When you’re designing your website, try to keep the visual clutter to a minimum, as you don’t want to overload your visitors with unnecessary videos, images, or gifs. And in regards to the written content on your website, you’ll want to keep paragraphs short, as the average internet reader will stop reading information if it’s over five or six lines long.

Create Space

Consider designing your website like you were designing your home; you wouldn’t want to cram as much information as possible into a single room, would you? Instead, space out the content on your website. If you provide multiple services or sell a variety of products, create separate pages for them instead of having one long, sprawling page. Your customers will be more likely to spend time exploring your website if you simply give them the room to do so.

Neutral Colors

You don’t have to use bright and vibrant colors in order to impress your customers. That tactic might work in person, but when you’re designing a website, you’ll want to use neutral colors in order to make your site look clean and modern. You can of course use small dashes of color, but you should only use them for your headlines; otherwise you’ll want to continue to use clean and simple colors that will be easy on the eyes of your customers.

Standardized Fonts

Remember, you’re designing a professional website for your company, not a personal website. This means you shouldn’t be using “fun” fonts like Comic Sans or any other type of font that isn’t used in a professional environment.

Using the standard Arial or Times New Roman font will not only be easier for your customers to read, but it will make your website look more professional and presentable. Another added benefit of standardized fonts is that they are compatible with all web browsers, which means you won’t have to worry about your customers have problems reading your website.

Provide Key Information On Every Page

Whether you’re designing your home page or a page describing the services you provide, you’ll want to provide key information on every page that will give your customers an idea of what your business does. This will ensure that they know exactly what you stand for, regardless of which page they are visiting. This is one of the many ways you can increase traffic on your website, as it can potentially lead to visitors telling other people about your website.

Test Out Your Designs

Even the simplest change on your website can have a tremendous impact when it comes to increasing your conversion rate and the amount of revenue for your business. That’s why it’ll be in your best interest to continually test your website in order to see which types of designs work best for you. This can be accomplished from using a simple analytics program, as well as taking advantage of advanced A/B testing, so be sure to make the effort to see which types of website designs are more effective for you!
