Last week was the Call To Action (CTA) conference in Vancouver, Canada. This was the internet marketing conference held by the company Unbounce. It was a great time to connect with many of online friends in real life. Going to conferences is a great way to meet like-minded people and network. On the way home, I scribbled some thoughts about what an amazing year its been so far.
This year has been filled with some great changes.
At the beginning of 2014, I was intentional about accomplishing more than any other year. Therefor instead of optimizing client websites only, I needed to optimize my own personal brand. My website alexdesigns.com has been a mess of lead generation experiments for about 3 years. Now it’s really time to document what has really work. Then work on a branding redesign with an optimized marketing optimization plan.
Last Black Friday, I created my podcast, Marketing Optimization. This is a weekly audio and video show where I interview the best in digital marketing and conversion rate optimization. I created the show because I didn’t go to marketing school. So I’m learning from the best to improve my skills. I ask them how they test and improve their websites and marketing tactics. Hopefully I give the audience ideas to increase their conversion too. That’s the podcast purpose – To give actionable and tactics ideas to increase conversion rate and generate more leads.
This year I also attended some amazing conference like New Media expo, Conversion Conference, Podcast Movement and just last week CTA Conference from Unbounce. Unbounce is a landing page software company based in Vancouver and Montreal Canada. The speakers including many experts that I had on my podcast. This included Oli Gardner, Peep Laja, Michael Aagrard and Brian Massey. I also met many new friends that I’ve chatted with on Twitter. The CTA Conference was well worth attending.
While at the conference, PPCHero.com released the top 25 most influential conversion rate optimization experts. I was hoping to make the list of the great experts. Then was surprised to learn I was #4.
It has been really remarkable how adding the podcast and then using what I learn to do my own marketing optimization plan improved my success this year. Not only did I interview these experts like Neil Patel, Pat Flynn, Clay Collins, but I’ve tried and tested many ideas I learned from their interviews. Its so interesting how to learn a marketing tactic from an expert and then try it on my own site.
The results were awesome. In fact I had my best q1 ever, as far as total revenue in 90 days. I doubled the frequency of how many emails I collect per day. Plus, I made that top CRO 25 list.
I learned a lot this year about understanding your target market and making better content. There are so many way to get qualitative data on your audiences like surveys, reviews and most important talking to your audience. So if you are interested in CRO please schedule a free call with me.
Then I realized that my content is consumed differently and those audiences can act differently. My audio podcast listeners can be slightly different from the video version on my YouTube channel. Plus my clients are a totally different audience. It’s been fun to try and take one piece of content and try and tailor it to those people.
Now looking to next year. I have a new book coming in the next few weeks. It is focused on e-commerce and you can get the free audio book here. Writing a book has always been a dream and getting this small ecommerce ebook in amazon will be a huge step for me. If you want to help me promote the book, please contact me.
